More Than Numbers: The Power of REAL Connection in Financial Advice
A few weeks ago, I was on a call with a client—someone I’ve worked with for years—who had been recruited for a big new role and just received the offer. It looked great (40% higher pay, great equity stake, C-level title, company doing really well, etc.).
This individual had an amazing career; professional success led to more professional success, and this offer was the logical next big step. Things were good on the financial side too (strong income, invested well, and had been lucky enough to have a 7-figure exit previously).
On paper, everything made sense. BUT things were far from good.....
When we talked about the WHY, things didn't feel right. "Everyone says I should take it," but the excitement wasn't there. In fact, it was more like he was hesitant.
More comp/equity came with more responsibility, longer hours. And he was burnt out. This resulted in one of the hardest -- but also one of the best -- conversations we've had. And it had nothing to do with numbers.
The reality was, his GOALS in life had changed overtime -- which is actually quite common (we want different things in our 20s than our 30s, and again in our 40s). He and I had talked about it many times; his financial plan and investment strategy reflected it (less future income increases, different risk profile).
BUT, it's hard to self-recognize. And even harder to change course in life once you do (especially for hyper achievers). I frequently tell my clients "your money is here to help you pursue life happiness." That tends to make sense to people. But its so easy to hear that...agree with it....but not really internalize it.
As we talked through things, it became clear the new job was a poor fit for where he now was. He declined the offer. And is talking with his company about a new role/team internally that energizes him a ton more. And he is more energized about his career than I've seen in years because of it!
This is the human side of money; and the power of REAL connection.
Many of the most important and impactful conversations I have with clients have little to do with numbers. Its about big decisions, being a listener and coach, and helping to ensure that we're charting a course for what's most important for them.
In nearly all my first conversations with prospective clients we dive into things like equity comp planning and tax strategy, liquidity event planning, concentration risk, and asset allocation. Those are essential parts of what I do, and where I add tons of value with experience and expertise.
But the human element is equally important. How you help individuals reflect on, and refine their path towards what's really important; navigate major life changes (financial and otherwise); and have a strong trusting relationship that allows for deep conversations, challenged assumptions, and open feedback. That kind of relationship can (and frequently does) change the trajectory of people’s lives sometimes. And it starts with connection.
Because when you deeply understand someone’s story, goals, fears, and dreams, you become more than just a financial planning geek. You become a coach, a guide, sometimes even a mirror.
You help them spot blind spots they didn’t know they had. You remind them of goals they told you about two years ago...but forgot in the swirl of day-to-day life. You help them pause before making a rushed decision. You provide clarity in moments of doubt, and calm during chaos.
In short, I help them live and focus purposefully—both financially and personally.
Why This Matters So Much for Tech Professionals and Founders
If you work in tech, your life doesn’t follow a traditional arc. You might go from making $160K to $3M in total comp in less than a decade. You might leave a stable FAANG job to join an early-stage startup—or start your own. You might see your equity vest, your company IPO, and your financial world shift dramatically overnight.
But "more money, more problems" definitely has some truths to it. Money without clarity can be just as disorienting as no money at all.
Without someone to help make sense of it all—to ask the real questions—it’s easy to make reactionary decisions that don’t serve your long-term life or values.
A Real Relationship Changes Everything
Over time, the best client relationships evolve into true partnerships. We talk about your equity, your career, and your taxes—but also your kids, your health, your fears, and your hopes.
We’re not solving for “the highest number.” We’re solving for your version of a well-lived life.
Yes, I'll keep track of your RSUs, ISOs and your AMT exposure. But I'll also remember that time you told me you want to write a book someday, or move to the mountains, and what items are on your bucket list + encourage you to cross off a few each year.
Real financial advice isn't just about the money. It’s about the meaning behind it.
