How Do I Find Out My Company 409a Valuation?

How-toFoundations1 min readBy Kris BarneyUpdated May 29, 2026

Summary: Your company’s 409A valuation determines the fair market value (FMV) of your private company stock. It directly impacts the strike price of your options and how your equity is taxed. As an employee you should know this information, and it's usually easy to find.

Here’s how to locate your 409A valuation:

  1. Check your equity portal (e.g., Carta, Shareworks, Pulley): Most companies post their latest 409A valuation directly in your stock option dashboard. Look for terms like “FMV,” “409A,” or “Valuation Date.”

  2. Search internal communication channels: Companies often share updates through Slack, email, or your internal HR portal or intranet. Try searching “409A” or “FMV.”

  3. Ask your equity or stock comp team: If you can’t find the information, send a quick email to your company’s stock comp, legal, finance, or HR team. Just ask:

“Hi, can you share the most recent 409A valuation for our company? I’m reviewing some equity planning decisions.”
